Halloween…..Trick’s, Treats and More Treats!!

It’s that time of year again!

 

HALLOWEEN!

 

Candy and more candy!  A festive time of year, the start of the “Holiday Season”.

If we are not careful, it all can go downhill starting now!

 

Halloween leads to Thanksgiving, which in turn leads to Christmas and the New Year.  Yes, “resolution” time!  However, if you take time to get a handle on things, you can “keep calm and carry on”.

 

It is important to live life and enjoy it!  Just try to keep your healthy habits in perspective! Stay to the diet best you can during the week, and allow that Halloween party (candy and all) and other fun times in check!

 

Exercise!  This is crucial.  If you want to play you have to pay.  So have a good attitude about it!  Make sure you have a realistic routine.  A back up piece of equipment is important to have in your home.  If you have one, make sure it is in working order BEFORE the cold weather hits.  If not, maybe consider investing in a newer piece with a full warranty.

 

The gym is great! If you have a membership, it is important to use it.  However, we all know what happens in January!  All the “newbies” coming in for their resolutions.

How to beat the frustration of that time of year?  How about adding some free weightsresistance bandsdumb bells or many other items to make an inexpensive home gym of your own at home?  A go to piece of cardio at home, like a treadmillelliptical or bike?

Fall Back Into Fitness!

Ah, the summer..So much fun! Taking those long summer days to head to the beach, that family cookout, or even that evening concert. All the while, munching and drinking ourselves into oblivion! The one thing we tend to lax on is fitness. Our workouts..our walks, our strength training, our group training sessions, spin classes, the cross fit routine, or even that home DVD that motivates you! (Thank you Tony Horton!) Yes, ALL OF THOSE THINGS fall by the wayside when summer hits.

Why is it we all go “gung ho” to get into that summer bathing suit, yet once in it, we forget to maintain those good habits? I’ll tell you why, human nature. We work hard, but then there is a time to play. And play we do! But welcome to the fall, and with that comes a reality slap. Whoa..The holidays are coming! I think my pants shrunk! I never noticed THAT before! Now what? Time to dust off that elliptical, lubricate that treadmill, and tour your local health clubs. Fall is the perfect time to fall back into a fitness routine. Time to get the diet and nutrition habits back in check before the holidays roll around. A way to jump start on theNew Year resolutions. Maybe you can knock off a few pounds before the holidays! Get yourself back to start by the time the New Year rolls around.

Elliptical Buying Guide

Hello out there… Recently we have been flooded with questions about selecting and effectively using an Elliptical and/or Crosstrainer….

So who better then to get the facts from then the American College of Sports Medicine… They are one of the best resources in the fitness industry. They have written a guide which we would like to share with you… The title:

Selecting and Effectively Using an Elliptical Trainer or Stair Climber

We will help digest this information and break it down for you.

ELLIPTICAL MACHINES

“The elliptical trainer combines the motion of stair-stepping with cross-country skiing, providing a low-impact aerobic workout.
Many elliptical trainers use alternating push/pull resistance bars to add an upperbody workout as you stride. The pedals can also be reversed (backward stride), which not only works the muscles in a slightly different manner but allows some variation in your workout.”

“There are two main types of elliptical machines available: rear-drive and frontdrive. ”

“A front-drive elliptical machine uses articulating pedals in order to match a natural stride of a rear-drive unit.” Many of the better front driven units have biomechanically correct articulating pedals. Be wary of the cheaper units under $1000.

You can now also find many front driven machines with incline as well. The main point here is that front driven machines with articulating pedals will match the feel of a rear driven machine, are just as comfortable and are equally recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine. So anyone who may tell you rear driven is better, is simply not telling you the truth.

“The primary advantage of a front-drive unit is the cost; no matter how much of a bargain it seems, front-drive units withoutarticulating pedals may result in motion that is unnatural and uncomfortable for most consumers. Make sure that stride length is comfortable! Some units accommodate a stride length of only 14 inches, which is too small for a tall person, while others are as long as 21 inches. A stride that is too short will make for an awkward, jerky elliptical ride.”

So both articulating front driven machines and rear driven machines are fine. Some may try to tell you to keep your heel flat on an elliptical. The fact is that you may have more of a natural running feel if your heels lifts up. When is the last time you moved flat footed? Do you do anything flat footed? This is a myth perpetuated by non-science. Just check out the picture below on The American College of Sports Medicine’s brochure for selecting an elliptical. It is of a front driven recommended machine.

SELECTING A MACHINE

“Ask lots of questions. Take a ten-minute test drive on several different machines. You will quickly develop a preference for console options, set-up and frame construction. Basic consoles should display time, distance, rate of speed and intensity level. Intensity may be controlled manually or pre-set from a menu of programmed workout choices when you start exercise. If your ten-minute test drive is even remotely uncomfortable, do not buy the machine.”

PRICE CONSIDERATIONS

“Elliptical and stair climber machines range in price from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. If you cannot afford a quality machine, your money may be better spent on a health club membership.”

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

“It is essential that your machine have solid construction and a stable frame, in order to give you a safe and effective workout. The handrails should be positioned so that your workout posture is upright with the knees behind the toes. Bending forward places a great amount of stress on the back and wrists. Using the handrails to support part of your body weight reduces the effectiveness of your workout and puts you at risk for injury. Handrails should be used for balance and/or resistance training. Read all of the manufacturers instructions to get the most out of your machine!”

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

Weight/Space

“Do you have appropriate floor support for the weight of the machine?”

“What is the maximum weight allowance of the machine? Most will have a maximum user weight of 350 lbs.”

“Determine your space considerations:
Is the space large enough?
Is the floor level?
Is the ceiling height sufficient?
Will the machine need to be stored periodically? Are there wheels that make the machine moveable?”

Maintenance and Durability

“Is the manufacturing company reliable
and reputable? Is the machine durable, easily assembled and easily maintained?
Look for a product that is maintenance free. A well-designed unit takes normal wear and tear into account.
Does the machine come with a warranty? Are local technicians available for service?
Look for a warranty that provides for a minimum of one year service and one to three years coverage on parts.
Be sure your warranty includes electronics and other key components, such as the resistance/braking system.”

Power and Performance and Operation

“Check the difficulty levels available on manual mode as well as the range of programs available.
Are you able to increase the difficulty of your workout as you increase your fitness?
Check the control panel features: Is it accessible and easy to read? Is it user-friendly? Does it offer the information important for your needs (time, distance, resistance, calories, etc.)?
Is the noise level acceptable?”

USING AN ELLIPTICAL TRAINER OR STAIR STEPPER

“When exercising, maintain the correct posture by keeping your shoulders back, head up, chin straight, abdominals tight, and arms relaxed. Your hands should rest lightly on the hand rails to assist with balance (or use the work-out bars if available). Do not lean forward or grip the bars tightly. Posture should be upright. If you have a tendency to lean on the hand rails on a stair stepper, adjust the step rate. Increasing the pedal resistance will cause you to slow the stepping rate. This should allow you to take your weight off the hand rails.”

IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER

“Wear supportive athletic shoes.
Avoid restrictive clothing.
Relax and maintain a steady stride, going through a comfortable range of motion.
A good machine should allow you to move comfortably and smoothly, without the chance of your knees bumping into the console.
Avoid machines with pedals that limit your range of motion.
Any fitness machine is only as good for your health as the frequency with which you use it. ACSM recommends exercising for at least 150 minutes per week, consistent with the federal physical activity guidelines.”

Is Summer REALLY Over?

Ah…what the hell happened?  I blinked and the Summer of 2017 is over?? Say it isn’t so!

Well I for one will not go quietly!  I want summer to NEVER end!

However, the body has enjoyed the Summer of 2017 very much!

So we are all in the same situation now, time to “reel” it in from all the bad habits, and fun parties and get togethers.  Diet? What diet? Training? What a regular routine?  Come on!

Time to get a schedule/routine again!  Perfect time is now!

See kids go back to school, fall starts to hit here in New England (when I say fall, I mean the two weeks of cooler temps and crisp Autumn leaves) We all know here we have two seasons.  Winter and Summer.  Summer lasts 4 months, Winter 7 months.  We have two weeks of spring (if lucky), and two weeks fall (when we go from 90 degrees to 20 and snow)

However, with “fall” we have FOOTBALL!  So here in Patriots country we shall still have those “get togethers” and continue the eating and drinking and being merry…because the Patriots are a fun team to watch with WINNERS.

Kettlebells

Kettlebell training is a great way to get yourself into amazing cardiovascular shape. It helps you to build muscle, while at the same time burning off fat. Only gaining attention in the Western world within the last few years, Kettlebell Training has long been a popular way for Russians.

Kettlebells originated in Russia back in the 18th century.  Resembling a cannon ball with a handle attached, it was used to help train the Russian military and athletes, and keep them in shape.

There are many benefits of Kettlebell Training. Some of these include: building lean muscle, increased stamina, higher levels of agility, and increased strength.  Kettlebell Training allows the user to get an intense workout!

There are a variety of ways to use this piece of equipment.  In place of ordinary dumb bells for many body parts including shoulders, chest, back, biceps, legs, etc.  Also, a routine designed specifically for the kettlebell and its variety of exercises. Cleans, Presses, Squats, Jerks and of course The Turkish Get Up, which is a very complicated, and skilled move.  It can be very hard core, and challenging.  Proper form and use of this device can really catapult you, when a routine becomes boring and repetitive.

A Workout and Vacation….Does it really work?

Here is a question I hear all the time.

Should I try a workout routine while away on vacation?

Well here is my take, for what it is worth.

Are you going away for a week, month, or a summer? That is important!

To all my friends traveling for a week or less..HELL NO! You work hard, you deserve a break.  Go, enjoy what life has to offer! (Spoken from someone who knows!)

When we returned from a 5 day trip to Cape Cod, it was worth every extra calorie, and non rep!  Gave the mind and body a chance to take a break!

However, keep in mind when you return, it is time to detox, and get back on that horse again!

If you do plan on going away for a longer period of time, then you must have a back up routine planned.  Bring some resistance bands, dumb bells, exerballs, kettle bells on your trip!  They can travel well.  Even check into a health club close by that may honor your existing memberships from clubs where you live.

Either way, you need to be smart about fitness and your health!  Take a moment to enjoy your down time! Focus on your mental health, as much as your physical health! Life is short so LIVE IT! And stay healthy!

What Ever Happened to the Stepper?

Ok who wants to go back……WAY BACK?

Like back to the 80’s?  When the “Stepper” made its introduction to many gyms across the country.  Back when women wore thongs on the outside of their spandex, and men wore parachute pants, and crazy prints with neon everywhere.  Or as I call it…the good old days!

 

 

So I may date myself a little here, but it was a cool invention!  Since the inception it has evolved.  It went from a clunky, poorly designed piece, and evolved into a well made, and genius piece.

It is simulated in ellipticals with more of a gliding stride motion, rather than depth.  There are Step Mills that have the actual “stairs” disappearing into the platform only to reappear at the top again!  Think about it!  The motion of using legs is so intense!  Simulating flights of stairs in the comfort of your own home!  From your glutes, to hamstrings, to quads and calves.  It is a great cardio and strength workout!

With all the hype of fitness equipment now a days it has become “lost” in a sea of new things on the market. Until now..

Let me introduce you to the newly redesigned Stepper from Spirit Fitness.  The CS 800 is an amazing piece.  Now hear me out. I was the biggest skeptic at first.  I laughed.  REALLY!  Like out loud laughed.  Then I stepped onto it and did a mini workout.  Holy Hell!  I was a fan!

It was smooth, and didn’t “bottom out” like the originals.  The clunking is no more!  It allowed you to train within your stride depth!  Allowing you to progress to greater depth as your flexibility improves.  The glute workout was intense!  I felt it almost immediately.  The frame structure was beefy, but not too beefy.  Built very well using high grade steel, aluminum and plastic components, and compact!  It really is a win/win!

Now is the time to “rethink” your cardio pieces.  Treadmills, ellipticals, bikes and rowers are not for everyone.  (Although we sell plenty of them too) This is going to be the next BIG THING..AGAIN!   This piece is so new, I haven’t even updated the website yet!
